Gallery & Showcase
The Arts Commission manages and curates the Newtown Municipal Arts Gallery and the Artisans Showcase. Exhibition is open to individual artists and arts organizations and is not limited to a Newtown affiliation.
Photographic Exhibit “Here’s to Painting” through May 29, 2026
“Here’s to Painting,” a group of 12 artists, nominally led by retired middle
school art teacher Claudia Mitchell, will be at the Newtown Municipal
Center Art Gallery through May 29, 2026.
The group is centered in Newtown but reaches as far as Southbury and
Trumbull. The members are The members, Liz Arneth, Tracy Fiore, Evelyn
Flaim, Meg Gioffe, Martha Glynn, Lynn Klar, Arlene Kreinik, Ellen
Mcnamara, Una Nash, Maureen Rohmer, Michelle Rosenthal, and Kelly
Urso.
“We’ve been working together a long time,” Claudia has noted. “These are
amazing people. Even during the worst of the pandemic, we Zoomed.”
Much of the art is watercolors with a few pastels also shown. One member had painted oil for a long time and came to enjoy the vibrancy and quick drying aspect of watercolors.
The art includes iconic scenes from Newtown as well as still lives,
portraits, and Streetscapes.
Potters’ Exhibit in the Artisans Showcase at the Potters at Municipal Center through May
The work of the Newtown Potters, Karen Pinto, Ros Liljengren and Vickie Foy and Roberta Ahuja have returned to the Municipal Center for their semi-annual exhibit in the Center’s showcase.
The Potters’ work will be in the showcase through May and is available for purchase.
The exhibit ranges from the purely fantastical to the very utilitarian mixing spoons and mugs. Whales and even lobsters adorn bowls and are also standalone sculptures.
Pinto and Liljengren are well known to Newtown as part of the Clay Date Potters who ran one of the most successful workshops for Healing Newtown, an arts center that was created in response to the tragedy of 12/14.
Vickie Foy, along with being a potter, is a well-regarded scientist at Unilever research and development facility.
Roberta Ahuja’s work reflects her style and embellishments.
